U kontekstu programskog istorijskog preispitivanja teorijskih i metodoloških dometa antropologije 20. veka, monografska studija problematizuje ponovljeno istraživanje kulture Dogona, sprovedeno od strane Voltera fan Beka spram ranijih istraživanja Marsela Griola. Ponovljena istraživanja, osim što predstavljaju retko tematsko polje na kojem se konkretizuju često nejasne razlike između polarizovanih realističkih i antirealističkih pozicija u antropološkoj metodologiji, imaju značajne heurističke i didaktičke funkcije. Uvođenje budućih istraživača u značaj i implikacije tipova i uzroka generisanja različitih nalaza i interpretacija istih kultura ili kulturnih fenomena od strane različitih autora, predstavlja jedan mogući način da antropološka metodologija revitalizuje strategiju zahvaljujući kojoj je svojevremeno i postala neodoljiva drugim disciplinama – problematizaciju širih teorijsko-metodoloških kontekstâ proizvodnje i upotrebe znanja u konjunkciji sa fokusiranjem na konkretne etnografske kontekste.
