FILM AS A SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE: THE EXAMPLE OF THE PRODUCTION OF FEAR OF TERRORISM IN MOVIES THE SIEGE (1998) AND RENDITION (2007)

Over the course of more than three decades, a fear of terrorism, which intensified after 9/11, has been present in the US. Through the two films used - as examples in this paper – The Siege (1998) and Rendition (2007), which were made before and after the events of September 2001, an attempt will be made to discuss the issue of constructing the danger Muslims present and the fear of them. The aim of the paper is to display the manner in which the fear of the other is construed, and what are some of the main elements that mark a certain group as dangerous within a society, and make it an object of fear. In order for a social issue to gain ground enough to be considered a social or political problem, it is imperative that the members of the group or society share the same (principal) knowledge about its meaning, which commercial Hollywood films enable. The viewing experience of fear represents one of the more important mechanisms for shaping and perpetuating this fear in reality.
