Abstract

Wartime rape is as old as war, and women have always been represented as part of the victor’ spoils. During the genocide in Rwanda, rape and other forms of sexual violence against women were used as a war strategy, part of a wider plan to purify the Hutu nation from their enemies the Tutsi. This paper aims to define specific forms of sexual violence against women during the genocide and shed light on the causes and initiators of this violence. The case of Rwanda has been chosen because it represents a turning point in international law, as three convictions given by the International war crimes tribunal on Rwanda characterized rape as a crime against humanity.
