Neposredan povod za ovaj tekst je smrt Kliforda Gerca, jednog od velikih autora u socio-kulturnoj antropologiji 20. v. čiji rad počiva u tradiciji terenskog rada angloameričke kulturne antropologije. Priča o njegovom životu, naučnoj karijeri i delu reflektuje društveno-kulturni kontekst posleratne američke antropologije i neke od teorijsko-metodoloških pomaka koji su se odigrali od sredine 20. v., pod uticajem filozofije, sociologije, literarne kritike i drugih disciplina. Glavni momenti su redefinisanje ekspanzivnog difuznog predmeta (ograničavanje i kognitivna definicija kulture) u 1950-im i zaokret u pravcu simboličke i interpetativne antropologije u 1960-im u akademskim središtima (Harvard i Čikago).
